Back in the day fans would ask in the MP public chats "Can Mike Portnoy teach me a drum lesson?" Part of his response was that that's why he made these isolated drums videos. I can definitely see what he means now. You can learn A LOT from MP just listening to the songs in the albums. These videos show everything even more amplified and with detail. I will tune my snare heads usually either high or medium tension (depending on the snare size, shell, etc). As for the snare wires, once my heads are tuned, I will lightly tap the top head with my finger until the snare wires are just enough to where the drum itself isn't overpowering the wires. I found this works best on all snare drums I have and it gives a nice balance of the drum and the wires

Jason rullo is much more technical and skilled than portnoy
